Blissbook has 2 types of variables.

Dynamic Variables

These are created automatically from the employee data you sync to Blissbook. They work like a mail merge field, showing a personalized value for each person who interacts with your content.

Dynamic variables are automatically created when you:

Static Variables

These are created manually and show the same value for everyone who views the content they're embedded in.

If you get policy content from Blissbook or use one of our model policies (coming soon), you'll see static variables in use in your policy library. Static variables allow us to deliver customized policies to customers who each have a different company name, call their HR department something different, and more.

How to Use Variables

You can add a variable to a policy in 2 ways:

  • Type {{ and an auto-complete list of your existing variables will appear. Choose the one you want from the list, or start typing text to filter the list down to a manageable size.

  • Click the { } icon in the policy editor toolbar. When you choose a variable, it'll be entered where your cursor is (and replace any highlighted text).

If you're using a static variable and you want to use a plural, possessive, or capitalized variation:

  • Add your variable as described above.

  • Click the variable within the policy editor.

  • Check the boxes for whatever you want to use.

Here's the possessive option in use:

"Capitalized" doesn't show as an option for proper nouns since they're always capitalized. If you call your HR department "the People Team" and you want to begin a sentence with that variable, check Capitalized.

Managing Your Variables

To manage your variables:

  • click the { } icon in the policy editor toolbar, then choose Manage Policy Variables:

  • Click an in-use variable, then click the edit icon in the pop-up:

The DYNAMIC VARIABLES tab is view only because Dynamic Variables are automatically synced, which means there is nothing to manage.

Click the STATIC VARIABLES tab to create, edit, and manage your Static Variables.

Create, Edit, and Manage Static Variables

To create a new Static Variable:

  • Choose a type so that Blissbook can correctly generate the plural, possessive, and capitalized variations of your variable values.

  • Enter a label and click the Add button.

  • Enter the "Draft Value" (the value you want this variable to have within all your unpublished, draft content).

  • Click Save Draft in the bottom right corner.

Once you've published one or more policies that contain a static variable, you'll need to click the Publish... button and confirm in order for your variables to show the correct value in your Live documents and policies.

Note: The Usage column tells you how many policies each variable is used in. If you click an icon in that column, a new tab will open with a view of the policy library showing the policies that contain the variable you clicked on.
