Compare two versions of a document

See what has changed from one version of a document to another without looking at each individual section's version history

Written by Diane Marshall

Blissbook's Version History table generates a summary of what sections were added, removed or changed. To access the version history of a document:

  • Hover over the document in the document library

  • Click the green dropdown arrow

  • Click Version History

Use the dropdown arrows next to each version so see the changes since the previously published version:

Creating a side by side comparison

Whether you need a report to send to a lawyer or you just want to see everything that changed all together, you may find yourself in a situation where you want to compare one version of an entire handbook to another to see what's different.

Blissbook doesn't have this functionality natively, but you can accomplish it with a little help from Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word.

Open the two document versions

Start by opening the two different versions of the document from your document's version history.

Hover over the version you want to open, then click the blue View Version link.

Generate the comparison

  1. Print each version to PDF: go to the MENU circle in the top right, choose Print to PDF, then click the Print Everything button.

  2. Download the PDF files, then open them in Adobe Acrobat and go to File > Export a PDF > Microsoft Word > Word Document.

    • If you don't have Acrobat, do a web search for a PDF to DOCX conversion tool. You'll find a bunch of options.

  3. Open one of the new Word docs, then go to Tools > Track Changes > Compare Documents....

  4. Pick your two documents. Word will generate a third document with a diff between the two.

  5. On the Review ribbon, open the Markup Options dropdown and unselect Formatting to hide most of the formatting redlines you don't care about.

That's it. Scroll through the doc and look for all the changes.
